SmallHD Cine 13 vs 1303 HDR

Hey Guys,

I've been using a SmallHD 1303 and really like it. Right now I have a tempting offer for the Cine13 and am thinking about upgrading to future proof my video setup (4K)

Have you guys used both models on set and can give a quick overview of the pros/cons of the Cine 13 in comparisson to the 1303?

I have a few concerns:

  • The new model has a built-in fan. How loud is it in general use? Is it always running or only when the device is overheating? And if so, how often is that the case (=how good is the passive cooling?)?

  • SmallHD claims that the new panel is even brighter but on the spec sheet they both claim 1500 nits... any thoughts?

  • Any issues with the new joystick? Does it behave/work differently compared to the 1303 joystick?

  • All the connectors are now facing backwards and not to the side like with the 1303. This seems like an inferior setup. I am thinking about situations where you may have the monitor just laying on a steadybag and the cables would be stressed a lot more this way.

  • Energy consumption: did you notice a difference in energy efficiency? I am assuming that the new model is consuming about the same when displaying HD signals but I might be completely wrong (I am guessing most projects that I'll be doing in the near future will still be using HD video transmitters but who knows...)

  • How good is the new hot swap battery plate that can be slid onto the back rail? Any wobble in the system? I couldn't find a clear picture of the mechanism. Is there a mechanical lock or is it just slid all the way down onto the power pins and looks through those?

Are there any other notable differences in handling and software wise that one should be aware of? Buggy menu doesn't seem to be a problem with page OS but I am asking nontheless.

I tried finding youtube videos from real people and not just marketing videos of the monitor in front of helicopters which tell you almost nothing.... sadly I couldn't find anything valuable.

It doens't help that SmallHD is not offering any classic user manual whatsoever but only website based stuff... not the support I expect when buying professional equipment.

Best,

Jim

It reads the actual voltage of the battery per mount. I spliced both voltage meters directly into the unregulated line on the gold mount.

It reads 9v if there is no battery on the plate, and is receiving power from the 2nd plate or xlr input.

The onscreen voltage display is also accurate in my experience.
