Venice, Hi-5 License and Remote Cable query

Hello all,

Hi-5 and Sony Venice 1 and 2 question.

I have a Hi-5 and am getting more and more jobs with the Venice cameras. One of my DoPs I work for has recently bought the Venice 1 camera, this has meant more of my jobs have been using this camera.

I already have the 7 Pin cam to 3pin RS cable for the C-force mini RF motor, for run stop.

I have been investigating onto the possibility of buying the £300 Hi-5 to Venice 1 and 2 cable to control the camera from the Hi-5 with the Sony License.

Watching the Arri Tech talk on the Camera licenses has left me doubting wether the cable is worth getting. I can gain control of FPS and NDs, if I want more control I need to go to the camera settings to enable remote control. This disables the settings from the camera, which means Ops, DoPs and DITs can’t change any parameters from the camera. Not only this but the ISO value changes to DB gain control, which also seems very counter intuitive. I know its made for TV mobile units, but does anyone know if this is going to be fixed any time soon?

Also for my main question after all this spiel. Is it worth buying this very expensive cable AND the very expensive license, to gain control of the parameters of the camera? Based on the fact my DoP and all Ops and DITs I work with, like to be able to control NDs, ISO, FPS and Shutter speed from the camera?

Is there a way around this limitation from Sony and Arri?

Any thoughts, ideas and past experience with this will be greatly appreciated.

I'm also interested in hearing thoughts on this. Personally I'm interested in the cable, but less so the license. NDs, FPS, and for me the tally for run/stop feels super helpful. My new favorite trick is to set my wheel color to tally. I rarely use the Venice lately, but this is interesting to think through, I appreciate your post!
