Any tips for pulling focus on infrared?
Hi everyone, it’s my first time posting in this form, had learned a lot reading the threads from this amazing website over the years.
So my question is does anyone have any advice while pulling focus on infrared?
The background story is I’m working as AC for a indie short film, since the film has some mystrical elements, DP choose to shoot on the full spectrum version of red raptor, with DZO Pavo series anamorphic lens. There is one very important scene we decided to do it in infrared, a complex long take, with camera on a jib arm while on a dolly, basically moving in every single possible direction. For the infrared shot, we had a sketchy photography variable infred frequency cut filter, that can stop basically all the light below the 750 on spectrum. The result looks very nice, it’s a unique visual aesthetic and an aesthetic choice driven by the script.
The main reason I’m posting here is that I can tell it’s different pulling focus on infrared, the skin looks different (just like the Harkonnen scene in dune part two), and certainly much more difficult.
Based on my limited experience, a little bit of peaking and dialing up the contrast on monitor tends to help a little bit, but everything still felt extremely soft, and mushy.
So has anyone has any experience pulling focus on infrared? How do you cope with the difficulties that come with infrared?
Anything will help, thanks for reading!

Hi Adrian, if possible put your monitor in black and white and turn on your focus assistant and put your focus peaking in red or green color....... I hope this help as well!
