Looking for 1st ACs for a ChatGPT field test

Hey guys, I was wondering how 1st ACs could possibly use chatGPT for making some parts of their work more efficient. I know it`s a polarizing topic, but I believe, that you can`t stop new technologies, but can at least benefit from them. So if you are interested, to help and give it a try, so we can later on make a blog post about your experience, please contact me, either in the comments or send me a mail: clemens@focuspulleratwork.com

Here are some ideas, of how ChatGPT could help:

  • Pre-Shoot Planning: ChatGPT can help generate detailed shot lists, equipment checklists, and schedules. This ensures they don’t miss any crucial details.

  • Technical Guidance: ChatGPT can provide quick answers to technical questions about camera settings, lens choices, or troubleshooting common issues.

  • Communication: Drafting clear and concise communication for crew instructions, equipment requests, or status updates can be more efficient with ChatGPT.

  • Data Management: For tasks like logging shots, organizing dailies, or even creating templates for camera reports, ChatGPT can assist in structuring and automating these documents.

  • Problem Solving: ChatGPT can offer solutions or tips when unexpected issues arise on set, providing quick insights that can help resolve problems without significant delays.

  • Knowledge Storage: First ACs can store frequently used information, such as camera settings for different types of shots, lens specifications, or even troubleshooting steps. They can easily access this stored information whenever needed, reducing the time spent searching for answers.

  • On-Set Notes: During a shoot, they can quickly jot down notes or observations using ChatGPT, which can be organized and referenced later. This can be particularly useful for keeping track of changes or issues that arise during filming.

  • Script Analysis: ChatGPT can help analyze scripts to identify specific camera requirements, special effects, or potential challenges, allowing the First AC to prepare accordingly.

  • Learning and Training: ChatGPT can provide resources, tutorials, and tips for continuous learning about new equipment, techniques, and best practices in the industry.

  • Communication Templates: They can store templates for common communications, like daily production reports, equipment requests, or feedback forms, making it easy to quickly generate these documents when needed.

Carnets:

  • Carnet Preparation: ChatGPT can provide step-by-step guidance on how to prepare a Carnet, including the necessary documentation and information required for different countries.

  • Customs Regulations: It can offer up-to-date information on customs regulations and procedures for various countries, ensuring compliance and smooth transit.

  • Document Templates: ChatGPT can help create and store templates for Carnet documents, making it easier to fill them out correctly and efficiently each time you travel.

  • Checklist Creation: It can generate detailed checklists to ensure all equipment is properly documented and accounted for, both when leaving and entering countries.

  • Troubleshooting: If issues arise with customs or Carnet documentation, ChatGPT can provide tips and solutions based on common problems and how to address them.

As I mentioned, I am aware that this topic is polarizing and maybe it`s a bad idea, but it`s still worth a try. If it works, we could make a ChatGPT Bot on the FPAW website, to store all information, so everyone can have quick access to it.

Thank you, Clemens

As much as I too have mixed opinions about our dependence on AI, I do believe that AI can definitely help maximise productivity in various fields including filmmaking.

1. Referencing prompts:

While referencing for lighting styles, frames and compositions for inspiration and to help the clients visualise, AI can help generate more accurate prompts and variations of them to browse more accurately.

2. Better note taking/brainstorming/mind mapping:

While ideating and brainstorming ideas, or simply having notes during the script readings, when using AI can help us minimise our work by feeding info like keywords, etc, and letting AI elaborate more. Especially while communicating with clients about feedback, changes, etc.

3. Helping everyone get on the same level:

Often, we may use similar sounding/confusing terminology on pre production decks and meetings, which can intimidate clients/freshers/non technical support staff simply because it may have seemed like a commonly used term, using AI to write can help simplify those terms and references for those new to the niche.

4. Lighting and contrast ratios: If programmed that way, AI can really help on set to calculate lighting and contrast ratios, especially when working with filter factors, and variable NDs for outdoor shooting and help keep track of it better.

5. Programming LED lighting: using AI for programming LED lighting can really help DMX operators for complicated lighting changes, or to record patterns.
