Hi all, hope everyone is keeping well? I am looking at a new monitor with an RX built in. Has any one used the Cine 7 sidekick? There seems to be pros and cons of both models eg the 703 is brighter but the cine 7 is less then half the weight of the 703. They are about the same price give or take. Any input would be gratefully received. I am torn, but leaning towards the cine 7.

I spoke with Scott at Teradek and he didn’t say exactly but alluded to onboard 4K monitors coming in the fall. They just released 4K production monitors.
That would be nice, but would then need the bolt 4k TX which is not the cheeps bit of kit.
Perhaps, but I’m hoping they make it not only 4K compatible, but also backwards compatible with the standard 500, 1000, and 3,000. That’s the part I’d wait for.
@Lance Mokma That would be awesome but the new 4k bolt TX has a totally new chip, its not backwards compatible, and the 500, 1000 and 3000s are 1080p.
However, between those two, 703U is best. Cine 7 give you camera control with connected via Ethernet.
I am leaning towards the cine 7 sidekick mostly because of its weight, being 550g vs 1.25kg of the 703bolt. The 3000nits is nice but I was thinking a shade when the 1800nits is not enough. I am not overly fussed about the camera control, will hopefully get that through the Cpro.
Yeah the camera control is ridiculous to me, unless it was somehow wireless. Anyways, all depends on what important to you. I would also agree that if you want lighter, the Cine Sidekick is best. Personally, I use mine on a stand 90% of the time, but I’ll get the Cine 7 “4K” wireless equivalent when it launches.
I own a 703 Bolt and use it as my main monitor for pulling. I have used the Cine 7 as well and I would second that the 703 is the better screen. Twice as heavy because it's built like a tank. Here are my personal thoughts:
Pros of the 703:
- Built quality
- No Touchscreen
- Bright as shit (brighter than what's needed for 98% of shoots)
- Available with V mount or Gold mount battery plates - I think the cine 7 does not have those options but I am not sure
Cons of the 703 Bolt:
- No HDMI (not the biggest deal but it did cause me an issue on a shoot before)
- Heavy (I have it on a stand as much as possible. If I do run and gun stuff I will strap it around my neck and use a baby pin adapter screwed into the bottom to raise it off my chest - No way you can hold a C Pro with the monitor attached for longer than 5 minutes without shaking)
Thanks Dennis, good points. I very much like that the 703 is not touch screen and super bright.
I'd go with the 703 bolt personally, I've used the cine7 and loved the weight, but overall wasn't too confident in the build quality. You could probably throw a 703 through a window and it would be fine.
If someone designed a good bumper/cage for the cine7 I may feel different, but the plasticy corners worry me.
I also view touchscreen as a big negative. I was using it with sony L batteries, and the monitor doesn't allow for full brightness when using those, so a sunshade is pretty necessary. But then its hard to use the touchscreen with the shade on.
You cant use full backlight when you use wireless on the Cine 7. also the steps on the backlight are to big. I miss a backlight option between studio mode and the lowest on standard mode.
the cine 7 also gets hot as hell when you have beed using it for a while.
@Max Dewoon Is the back light issue when using the Sony NPF battery or the Vlock? I not sure, but I think the higher voltage of the vlocks will allow full brightness? I guess this why the SKRX version only ships with the vlock or gold mount.
I use v-lock. it says the backlight is reduced because of the enabled wireless. But I think the maximum backlight is fine.
I'm using the Cine 7 and I'm super pleased.
I always felt the 703 lacked the "kick" in the focus when messing around with the peaking settings. This might have been to me not finding the proper settings but the Cine 7 was love at first sight.
The small compact design is such a plus for me even if it spends alot of time on a stand.
The Cine 7 is available with V-lock or gold mount.
@Arvid Jernqvist I was thinking of using the Bebob 45s on the monitors.
That is the setup I’m currently using. Super sleak! I get about 1-1.5h from each battery depending on what backlight settings I’m running
@Arvid Jernqvist Thats also super helpful thanks. I have been using math (which I am terrible at) to try and work out the run time but great to know a real world situation. Thanks again.
