Monitors come down to preference imo. If you really want a 5" Tv Logic I would suggest getting a used 5.6W for cheap, and then transition to 7" Tv Logic or SmallHD702/3. Nits rule, but 1k with a hood feels quite enough. What I mean you dont need to go for a latest model. My vote goes to SmallHD though, again preference..

055 i only use when i'm operating/DOP. Colors are much nicer.

For focus get the 7H2, Clovis

What i just think is the 7hmk2 it's i little bit bigger if you have to use os a handunit system.

When I used with Bart, we have to mount I different setup to build the focus system with the monitor. So the 055 or 058 or 056 its better to make a new deal of setup. Like with sometimes the focus puller have to be near the camera walking the 7inches its more difficult.

But I understand tha the 5 inches monitor sometimes it's small screen to pulling focus...

Just sharing some experiences :)

Hey Motta! Nice to see you here!

And you are totally right about the monitor size. I like the 7" but the 5" can be more easier to work in some situations.

Bart, your 7hmk2 is amazing and I'm aiming for it. but I am buying other things so I have to "focus" now on my Cpro. maybe next year I can take the F7h.

Thank you a lot.

sure.. thats why a O58 or a 056 (cheaper then) would be good for you?. For a long time I preferred the 056 over the 058. Not too sure about Small HD although it seemed to work ok for you on our shoot?? Sure, I love my 7H2 but it's hard to get in Brazil? Not that mad expensive if you consider all the benefits..

Don't go for 055. Not that great for focus, nice colors though.. And yes. OLED will burn in those frame lines and status info

We use a lot the 058w here in Brazil. I like it but thinking fast the SmallHD is Brighter and bigger than Tvlogic's 5.5 and have the same price. In our shoot it works well for me I just fell that it should to be a little more sharpen as TvLogic monitor. But genarelly I like it.

Bring equipments to Brazil is expensive, so I have to think very well or buy something here which is not so expensive. But no one here is selling the F7h yet.

And I forgot the 055.

Thanks Bart.

Hi Clovis!

Well....

If your main workfield is run-and-gun sets where you cant put a monitor on a tripod, i would suggest the 5.5 tvlogic. Or even the old 5.6 (i dont think they sell them anymore...)

But. If you are working on productions with a little more time, i would suggest the 7" TVlogic. Super bright, nice sharpness (im not a peaking fan) , lightweight and a good balance between price and quallity.

Curious what you are going to buy! Let us know!

Hi

the 055a is not bright enough to use even inside.

And more , the screen is OLED so extremely sensitive to static image. With all the status info display by the camera , you will burn your screen and have frameline for life.

A focus-puller is the eyes of the audience. It's like telling a story without any words.

I follow Carlos: The monitor is a little bit too small and the specs aren't that great as the F7h.

Look out for the Tv Logic F7H, or my personal favorite: Tv-Logic SRM 095W. I love having the psychical buttons :)

All the best

My name is Carlos Cañal and I am a Spanish focus puller working in the camera department since I am 19 years old.  I do mainly national and international features films and commercials.  I love to travel, get to know other people, cultures and of course colleagues from around the world.

I am a very happy owner of a cPRO LCS too !!

I personally don´t think VFM-055A is a good monitor for focus.  The new generation F7h and F5A to me are the best Tvlogic monitors in small size.  Take a look through the forum because there are different reviews and comments about them.

Cheers!

I have both the 055a and the F7Hmk2 so I can alternate depending on the situation. I just recently got the F7H and it’s nice to have the bigger screen size.

i find them both great focus pulling monitors, the brightness of the F7H is definitely helpful for exteriors. Don’t even need a hood on bright sunny days.

Started out as a focus puller 8 years ago, I shot movies and commercials in Italy, Spain, Turkey, Uk, Bulgaria, Morocco and USA. Love everything camera related, gear porn and sharp lenses. Sharpness is not debatable.

Hey Clovis, I’ve had the 055 on a job recently and I totally agree with Carlos and Bart. It does have nice colors but focuspulling wise is kind of terrible, Because you can see the image very well the image when it is still, but when the camera and/or the talent move sideways or up and down it totally loose definition (which also makes the focus assist totally useless). I think is a matter of the way the monitor “refresh” the image or something like that. Long story short, if you wanna a 5 inch, in my opinion you should go for the new F5A, which is not very bright but for focus it’s incomparably better. Also is not that expensive and surely worth the money. Anyway, same old advice. Try to test them both and go for the one you like the most (when testing the 055 make sure you pan and or tilt the camera and try to follow moving person and/or objects)

good luck!

Hey Fabio,

I already gave up the 055. There is so many options on the market. Like the SmallHD 703 bolt, but even more expensive then F7h. But I think that I will gonna buy the f7h mk2, no doubt that is the better monitor for focus puller.

Thank you!

Thank you guys, I'm thinking about the F7h but the price is more than double than 055. I'm considering the 058w whitch is a very good monitor but it is out of production and can be a problem on the future.

Well, thank you a lot!

I have the F7h and I am very happy with it. To me, once you try the high bright there is no way back.  Beside it, the direct replacement of 055 is the F5A, take a look at it...

If you have any further question about F7H let me know.

Cheers

In Turkey, 058 is the industry standart. 056 is ok if you don't have 058 but 055 should be used. I think it suits much better as an operator/Dop monitor than focuspuller.
