Hi All!
I have a feature coming up where we will have a lot of shots with the Ronin 2, so I've been thinking about how I can make switching setups between Ronin, handheld and dolly/tripod as efficient as possible.
One thing that would be a huge help, would be to be able to have the side brackets stay on the camera at all times. I know that it is possible to have a MAP-2 on the top of the camera when using the vertical arm extensions, but is it possible to mount the MSB-1 side brackets using the ronin baseplate instead of a MAP-2 on the bottom?
The Ronin Baseplate does have threads on the side, but I don't know for sure if they are the correct size and position for the MSB-1 (the DJI manual is of little help here and I can't test it atm), and when looking up images of the Ronin2/Alexa Mini combo, ALL of them are using the camera without the side brackets...
Did someone here try to do that already?
Hi Philipp, the ronin 2 baseplate has holes on the side that fits with the mini's side brackets.
I'm doing the same on a show at the moment where we swap between ronin 2, dolly, tripod and handheld several times a day and i would recommend using Ignite Digis ronin 2 plates with quickreleases to be efficient. All accessories are mounted on a ratworks intergrated side bracket.
Me and my 2nd switch between ronin and other setups in 2-3 minutes. Hopefully under 1 minute before the end of the shoot!

Why would you want to use the Ronin base plate without a MAP-2?
I felt like I would get more flexibility to move the other Ronin Plate that goes below it forwards/backwards because of the moveable threads on the bottom of the Ronin baseplate...
But that's a good point, I might be good with using just the MAP-2.
But are there other reasons why nobody uses the side brackets in ronin setups? I don't think it is too wide or something, is it?
Did you use the MSB-1s with MAP-2 on the bottom in a Ronin setup?
I always leave the MSB on. Doesn’t make any sense to take them off, other than weight. The only thing that might get you in trouble in the side-to-side is a bad placement of the Lcube.
Also Teradek stays on the camera. It’s all set up, so you only need to pull the camera out, attach the battery and EVF and/or monitor and you’re ready to go. Changing from any setup to another usually take two to max. four minutes.
Exactly my thoughts, I wanted to only have to attach the bottom rods with the battery plate, the top handle and the EVF, and the on-board monitor and rangefinder with cinelocks to make a setup change really easy...
Good to hear that this is possible using the MAP-2 on the bottom, I will try to go with that!
Danke! ;)
Bottom rods stay in. You can use 10cm detachable rods at the back of the camera and unscrew them. Cine RT stays on as well, of course. And don’t forget to order your tilt extensions. ;) Gern gschehn!
@Aurel Wunderer I was thinking about having nothing else except for the battery plate on the bottom rods (motor is on top rod, matte box is clamp-on), that way I don't have to keep the bottom rods in when going on the gimbal, and I don't have to use screw-in rods. I feel like removing the whole back by removing the rods is easier than putting rod-extensions on and off every time.
Haven't decided about where to put the CineRT yet, normally I like to have it on the top handle, so I'd have a cinelock there and a cinelock somewhere else for gimbal. And yeah like I said I'll definitely need the vertical arm extensions, without those I wouldn't even get the top MAP-2 for the top rods on there.
Thanks for your thoughts on this!
