We're about to start prep on a new feature, and as I was going through the equipment list, I paused for a beat, and thought to myself that far too few people know about this piece of gear. A colleague of mine, who is a grip and a drone operator, developed a 3D printed matte box which is very light, and each filter stage is mounted by strong neodymium magnets. He made it specifically for shooting with drones, to keep weight down and make filter changes swift. But it's also great for gimbals and other purposes. A lot of foreign DP's and AC's that he's worked with, have ended up buying the system from him after seeing it in use.
In our case, we're bringing it along, both to keep weight down (for handheld and gimbal), and to avoid vignetting, as we'll be using a lot of wide lenses. It's a smart system, and they sell adapters to fit most standard front diameters. When I've used it on other projects, we've usually kept the most used filters inside the filter trays, inside a pouch, making any filter changes really quick.
The matte box has mounting points for a top or bottom flag. They've also made a diopter stage, that takes standard 138mm diopters, and a tilted filter stage to avoid filter ghosting.
He hasn't really done any PR for it or anything, but I think it deserves some attention. It's made to order, and very reasonably priced. He's also very open to help with any custom needs.
Contact him @ email@example.com for pricing and more details.
He's based in Norway, but ships worldwide.
