Shooting with Sony Venice Sony Venice By Fabio on 2/28/19, 8:05 AM • 1,352 views The Sony Venice from the assistant cameraman point of view I’ve been shooting with the Sony Venice some four weeks now, and I would like to share my experience. Just to be clear I won’t be saying anything about the performance of the camera from a cinematography point of view, since I’m not a cinematographer and I think in this kind of things everyone should go, test it and get his own conclusions. The camera feels strong (finally is not plastic or similar) and I like very much the size, just a bit bigger than the Alexa mini but slightly smaller than the Alexa plus. With the raw recorder and the wooden camera D-box I’d say that is pretty much the size of an Alexa which I personally like a lot. I don’t like when cameras are too small (unless the shoot needs it to be as small as possible) because you eventually run out of space to put acs and to change the configuration is slower when everything is so tight. Following with the build, I love the display on both sides, simple and quick on the op side, bigger and more complete on the “dumb side”. And thank god, finally one BIG Rec buttons on each side. One of the features that really Impressed me is the internal nds: each step from 0.3 to 2.4 and is so incredibly fast, sometime the camera op asks for a particular nd, and when he looks at me again and I have my thumb up, he often says “you already did that?”. In general I miss some RS and dtap outputs but with the top plate and the v-mount plate by wooden camera the problem is easily solved. One thing I noticed, the camera gets pretty hot on long takes and once we had an issue because the fan started going (loudly) right in the middle of a take. We are shopping in studio and The temperature is not extreme at all, so I’m a little worried about the performing of the camera under the hard spanish summer sun, but we will see. From the menu point of view, Sony improved a lot and the navigation through the most important setups is pretty easy and fast enough. Diving deeply, there are some things I don’t like, like the fact that the SDI outputs are not really independent or that the elements of the framelines are not as easy to activate and deactivate as, for instance, in the Alexa family. Resuming, I’m happy with the camera, is reliable and easy to use. I already shot with Sony cinema cameras such as the f55, but I would say that this is the one I’m more comfortable with. Maximilian Aponte On 3/28/19, 5:29 AM Thanks for sharing your experience so far, I haven't had the opportunity to be in a long project with it to get to know the flaws that are hidden in the details. One thing that I found odd a couple days ago, if project is based at 23.98fps, the FPS tab shows up as "fixed-24fps", this is true as well in the SDI monitoring out, just a heads up since this might be confusing, specially if you are working with an agency or a jumpy director or DP. I heard that Prores 4444 will be added and that flipping the sensor H+V will be available in the next update.
